2016 Goals Update: The Halfway Point

It's time for a midyear look at my 2016 goals! Check my progress on learning photography, growing my blog, being healthier, getting some me time, & more!

Hello there, July! I have been looking forward to you for a while! The temperatures might be climbing (most of the days in our forecast have highs in the triple digits), but that’s okay with me because spring is done! I hate spring and I’m always glad to move on to summer. July also brings us to the halfway point of the year, and that means it’s time for another check-in with my goals.

In case you missed it, I decided on my goals in this post, and had the first quarter update here. Now that you’re all caught up, here’s how I’m doing:

Lose Weight

Nope. I can say that I’m holding steady, and that I’m not gaining anything right now. I’ve really slacked on the whole dieting thing the past month, so being able to say that the number on the scale isn’t going up is actually pretty impressive. However, this slacking is coming to an end now, and I’m refocusing once again on this goal.

Work out 3-4 Times a Week

Not even a little bit. In April I did pretty good at getting up a little earlier and doing some yoga several times a week. In May I got so caught up trying to work ahead on the blog before we left for vacation that nothing but blogging got done. In June I changed my focus. I started getting back to my weekly cleaning schedule, and tried staying on top of the laundry and housework. Between that and the blog, there wasn’t much time to work out. Plus, in total honesty, I just didn’t want to. I really need to find a workout that I’m comfortable with, then I’ll be at it all the time!

Be Healthier

Yes! Aside from the last few weeks of totally slacking in the food department, I can say yes to this goal. Most days I’m drinking all of my water. I’m even using my planner for meal planning so that I can make sure we have healthier meal choices. Staying on top of housework has gotten me up and moving around a lot more, so I can see that my average steps on my Fitbit have gone up from the beginning of the year.

Take More Time for Myself

No and yes. Since we came back from vacation a month ago, the twins have had a hard time with their naps. Not so much taking them, but the waking up from them part. The girls used to wake up all happy and giggles, and they’d happily play in their beds for a while chatting together (cutest thing to hear on the baby monitor!). Now, one of them inevitably wakes up much earlier than usual with awful cries, and I have to dash through the house hoping I can get her out of there before she wakes up her sister. I’d rather have one cranky, sleep-deprived toddler than two. They no longer have any desire to play in their beds after their naps. Life with twins!

That being said, my quiet time in the middle of the day has shrunk drastically, and it’s taking it’s toll on my sanity. I’ve recently realized how precious and important me time is. So with some great communication, Hubs makes sure that I get some time out of the house on my own, even if it’s just to the grocery store.

I’ve also managed to sneak in a little more time for reading, and I’ve already finished one of the books on my summer reading list. If you haven’t read Me Before You yet, go get your copy now!!!

Get Out of the House More

Yes! Not only did we have an amazing family vacation where we went home to celebrate the 50th anniversary for Hub’s parents, we have also been getting out for more little adventures. I’ve even been getting out with the kids while Hubs is working. I’m not gonna lie – it’s not easy getting around with three kids, but it does make everyone happier.

Grow My Blog

Yes! Thanks to a post going viral on Pinterest, I had over 10k views for the month of May! And while June wasn’t nearly as high, it was still considerably higher than before. My email subscribers list grew by over 4 times! However, I’ve been feeling a little uninspired lately, so for the past few weeks I’ve been writing only one post. That has given me more time to work on promoting, and a little more time to focus on the house, too.

Learn Photography

Yes. While I can’t say I’m a pro (or using manual mode on the camera), I can say that I’m finally learning more about it. I’ve taken an online course, and I’ve been doing some more reading. I’m really happy with the way most of my photos are coming out now. It’s progress, and that’s all that matters. I think the photo below has to be one of my favorites. It was for my Key Lime Coconut Cream Mini Pies post.

Key Lime Coconut Cream Mini Pies are the perfect summer dessert! Cool, fresh, healthy, and kid-friendly! Quick & so easy to make! #effortlesspies #ad

Have Date Nights

Yes! Hubs and I have been much better about making sure our time together is quality. While we were staying with family on vacation we managed to sneak out a few nights after we put the kids in bed. We’ve even managed a few date nights at home by putting the kids to bed a little early.

I have to say that for the most part, I’m pretty happy with where I stand on my goals. I know where I need to work harder, and I know what needs my focus.

  1. I love reading updates! I feel you on the whole working out thing. I did really well a few months ago but then I slacked off, but I need to get back on it!

    • Thanks! There were days where I wanted to work out, but it didn’t fit with everything else I needed to do. And then there were days (almost every other day) where I just flat out didn’t want to! 🙂

  2. More time for yourself- yes girl! Love that you made this a goal!!

  3. Thank you for this article, very helpful tips! Continue to be informative and patient in getting more blog goals 🙂

  4. All worthy goals! Great job!

  5. Congrats on getting a pin to go viral! (I am still waiting for that day!) And on the bright side of things, at least you didn’t gain any weight!

  6. I love this pos, such a great read, I agree with it all!!! the time for yourself is a big one!

  7. I think you’re making a lot of progress on some of these goals. Growing children mean that life and schedules are constantly evolving. I really like that on the goals where you haven’t made as much progress as desired, you’ve identified what will help you change that.

    • Thank you, Aubrey! Instead of focusing on what I haven’t gotten done, I try to be more optimistic and focus on what I can change.

  8. Congratulations on growing your blog! It sounds like you’re making a lot of progress and, more importantly, being patient with yourself when things don’t work out as well as planned. Best of luck with the second half of 2016!

  9. Any progress is good progress so hooray you!!! Overall it sounds like you’re on a good track now just keep it up. 😉

  10. Neely Moldovan

I think you’re doing great. You still have so much of the year left too!

    • Thank you, Neely! I was thinking the same thing. The year is halfway gone, but it’s a year, not a week, so I’m good! 🙂

  11. What awesome goals! That’s so exciting one of your posts went viral. I can’t wait for the day one of mine does! 🙂 I’m right there with you and exercising. I feel like I’m still doing something, but not nearly enough that I should be doing. It’s a lot of work and hard when its so hot outside! Good luck with the rest of your goals!

    • Rachel, it was so exciting! I’ve never seen numbers like that before! Now I just have to figure out how to do it again! 🙂 Thanks for your support!

  12. Sounds like you’re doing great! That picture is amazing, and congrats on the blog growth! It took me a while to find an exercise class that I like, but now that I have one, it is much easier to go. I can’t believe we’re halfway thru the year already!

    • Thanks, Shann! I’ve really been dragging my heels about the whole exercise and diet thing because I love pasta too much. But here pretty soon we’re going to get back at it!

  13. Ah great goals, very similar to the ones we all try to keep. Maybe I should list mine as well, better chance at achieving them. I have many goals in my head, and random weekly lists in many notepads and apps. lol

    • Yes! Absolutely list them!!! It has been a total game changer. And you’ll find so much support from others if you post it, and I’ve found that to be so encouraging.

  14. I’m definitely trying to refocus on my weight loss goal too – I just get distracted sometimes. And congrats on growing your blog, 10,000 views is awesome, I hope to someday reach that!

    • It’s so easy to get distracted because there’s pasta, holidays, birthdays, and sometimes it’s just easier not to worry about it at all. 🙂

  15. Great goals, and some great progress too. YAY for going viral on Pinterest and getting some amazing blog growth. And yay for your huge family vacation – with 3 kids that is something awesome. I think as long as you’re eating well and drinking water, your health and weight loss goals will catch up 🙂 xoxo

    • Thank you, Julie! We’ve really been slacking on the healthy foods and drinking water thing lately, but I’m really looking forward to getting back to it. I always feel so much better when I’m eating good food.

  16. I consider not gaining any weight a great accomplishment! Also, congrats on your blog views and email subscription list. And getting date nights and time alone is a win! Sounds like your second half of the year is going to be awesome!

  18. I feel your pain on the sleep department! I only have one toddler (plus a 4 year old) and she has decided 4:30-5:30 am is a perfectly acceptable time to wake up and that she only needs a short nap in the afternoon. Between that and being pregnant, my whole plan of getting up before the kids has gone straight out the window. 🙂

    • Oh my goodness, Aileen! I would be completely crazy by now! It’s extra rough when you’re pregnant and worn out. Good luck! I hope they let you get some rest!

  19. I recently realized that I don’t get out of the house very often. I definitely need to force myself to make an effort with that. I enjoy it when I get out, but if I don’t schedule it for myself it’s not going to magically happen.

    • That’s so true! I try to take some spontaneous trips with the kids, but a lot of the time I will skip it if I think I can get away with it.

  20. It must be so tough when you have twins and they’re not sleeping great – I only have two kids and I know how bad it is when one of them is off their sleep. I bet that hasn’t helped you’re working out and losing weight goals. Well done with your blog though – 10,000 views is amazing! I’m also trying to learn photography, it’s fun learning how to actually get out of auto every now and again.

    • The sleep thing is slowly getting better. I was really excited about the views, but I know it won’t be the same for this month. I’ll just take it and run though. 🙂 And the photography is really fun; I’ve been enjoying it a lot.

  21. Sounds like you’re doing so great Samantha and congrats on hitting milestone on your blog! I have to work on the date night one for sure. Although, we are going canoeing tomorrow! Hopefully we don’t kill each other lol!
