Years and years ago in a previous life (a.k.a. life before children) I worked in a bookstore. It was heaven to be surrounded by the intoxicating smell of freshly brewed coffee and brand new books. I loved setting up the displays of hot beach reads and helping people find just the right book to take on vacation, not to mention making my own stack of books to read during the inferno months. It’s that time of year again, except this year I’m up to my eyeballs in Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Sesame Street. However, I’m still determined to knock out a few good books. Here’s my summer reading list:
Me Before You, by Jojo Moyes. Yes, I can admit to not having read this book yet. I’m probably one of the few who haven’t. It’s been on my list since it came out a few years ago, but I just haven’t gotten to it yet. I really want to read it before the movie comes out, so I’m trying desperately to stay away from any spoiler alerts!
Big Magic, by Elizabeth Gilbert. This is another one that’s been on my to-read list forever. It’s a must-read for any creative or anyone who wants to pursue their dreams. From all the reviews I’ve read, it’s impossible to read it and not walk away completely inspired.
The Happiness Project, by Gretchen Rubin. What would you do to find your happiness? I love the premise of this book because even though the author wasn’t unhappy, she knew she could be happier, and she spent a year trying different things to find her bliss.
Truly Madly Guilty, by Liane Moriarty. I have read most of her other books (The Husbands Secret & Three Wishes were my favorite), and she is one of my favorite authors. I’m so excited that she has a new book coming out in July! This one looks just as twisty and intricate, and asks the question “what if.” How would their lives be different if they hadn’t gone to that barbecue? I can’t wait to read this!
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, by J.K. Rowling. Of course this is on my summer reading list! I have read the Harry Potter series countless times, seen the movies over and over, and I can’t stop listening to the audio books. Hi, my name is Samantha, and I’m a Potter Head. I’m not ashamed to admit that at all. You can bet I’ll be grabbing a copy of this as soon as it’s released (appropriately enough, on Harry Potter’s birthday), and I will absolutely be geeking out. Join me, will you?
Paw and Order, by Diane Kelly. No summer reading list is complete without some fluff, and this fits the bill perfectly. I love a good mystery series, and Paw and Order is the second book. I read the first one a few months ago, and it was absolutely adorable. It’s part mystery, part romance, part humor. The story is told mostly from the main character’s point-of-view (a Dallas cop), but you also get snippets from her partner’s point-of-view, a snarky and sarcastic massive german shepherd.
So there you have it, the six books on my summer reading list. Will I actually get to read all of them? I hope so, but realistically, probably not. I just need to sneak in a little extra time for myself (one of my goals for the year). Plus, it will be easier to cut back on some tv, since most of our shows are done for the season.
