Flying Mimosas

Flying mimosas are a great celebratory drink. The secret ingredient gives it a kick that you won't find in any other mimosa!

What is it about mimosas that makes them so wonderful? Is it the champagne? The orange juice? Is it the novelty of drinking before noon being acceptable?

Whatever the reason, I love mimosas. They are my go-to beverage for big celebrations. The twins turned one – mimosas! New Year’s Day – mimosas! Christmas morning opening presents – MIMOSAS!

That’s one of our newer family traditions. The first year we did it we were celebrating our first Christmas in a house that we own! It was so much fun that we thought, “Why not? Let’s do that again!” And we’ve been having mimosas on Christmas morning since then.

But what if I told you these weren’t regular mimosas? What if I told you we added a secret ingredient that gives it an extra kick? Something that gives it “wings,” if you will.

The recipe is just as easy to make as any other regular mimosa. Just add everything to your glass and give it a quick stir.

1 part champagne
1 part orange juice
1 part Red Bull (we use sugar-free)

That’s right folks, we added Red Bull. It sounds a little strange, and to be perfectly honest, I was very skeptical at first. Hubs had been wanting to try it for a while, but I was terrified it would be gross and a waste of perfectly good champagne and orange juice. Wasting champagne is not allowed!

It was surprisingly delicious! The Red Bull actually blends in pretty well with the other flavors. You get 3 great things all in one glass: champagne (yum!), orange juice (it wouldn’t be a mimosa without it!), and CAFFEINE! Have you ever had a mimosa with caffeine? I have, and it was awesome!

I really have to give Hubs the full credit for this one. It was definitely one of his better ideas. He earned a “Yes dear, you were right” for this. And now it’s even in writing – and on the internet! Now I really can’t take that one away!

Flying mimosas are a great celebratory drink. The secret ingredient gives it a kick that you won't find in any other mimosa!

Save this in case you feel like sharing it with your spouse one day!

Christmas is coming up, followed by National Champagne Day (December 31) and New Year’s Day. So many occasions and reasons to celebrate. Have a Flying Mimosa! Let me know how you like it. And remember, if you didn’t like it all, it was his idea!

Do you have a go-to celebration beverage? Or do you have any off-the-wall family traditions like this? What’s your “yes dear, you were right” moment? Tell me below in the comments!

  1. Haha, flying mimosas are such a fun name. I’ve only had mimosas twice in my life, so I don’t have a lot to go by.

  2. It looks really great! 🙂

  3. Hilarious!! I love a mimosa too! reading a magazine? Mimosa!!
Thanks for sharing this fun post!

    • Oooooh! I like the way you think! Maybe for me it should be folding laundry? Mimosa! Then I might actually get caught up on that!

  4. Ooh I could use one of these right now. I love mimosas so the red bull is a nice twist. Usually after brunching and sipping several mimosas, I am ready for a nap, but the red bull might keep me up

  5. Yum, Yum, Yum! I’ve been looking for new drink recipes to try out for the New Years!

  6. These sound so good! I love mimosas!!

  7. I kind of want to drink this now at 9:15 AM in the morning 🙂 It’s Friday after all and I am sure it’s 5 PM somewhere in the world lol. Great idea on the redbull addition.

    • That’s the beauty of mimosas – it’s totally ok to drink them in the morning! Have one for me! We ran out of champagne after doing this…

  8. Oh my god, you crack me up! You seriously created an image saying your husband was right! Ha! I’m definitely trying your flying mimosas!

    • Aileen, the worst part was that HE DIDN’T EVEN NOTICE IT!!! He said he liked the post, but then got all confused when I asked him if he liked the image I made for him. Go figure! lol

  9. Wow, that’s the way to start the morning! I think you’re right that it being socially acceptable to drink in the morning is part of its appeal. I love the name “flying mimosas” too!

  10. I have never had a mimosas so I am feeling all out of the loop.

  11. Oh this could be a new Christmas Eve tipple. We used to drink Morgan’s spice and Coke but had so much last year even the smell makes me hurl……..thanks for the recipe and big high five to hubs.

  12. I love a mimosa almost as much as I love a bellini! I think I need to try it with the red bull like you suggested. Guess what we’re buying supplies for this weekend? LOL Thanks!

  13. Love your post, subscribed too 🙂 I need to get my man to come up with a festive drink, due to an incident when I was wee, anything orange flavoured makes me sick 🙁 No mimosas for me lol

  14. This sounds yummy I adore a mimosa

  15. I think we just found a new tradition! Thanks! 😀

  16. I always thought Red Bull had a cinnamon-Y flavor so I bet it does compliment well. I always like to throw in a splash of vodka too?? I can’t help it’! You’re my style!

    Come link up:)

  17. This sounds amazing! Mimosas are definitely my favorite drink and I love adding little twists to it. Love the name too!

  18. I’m seriously obsessed with mimosas. Sunday brunches when I lived in Florida weren’t complete without a new mimosa to try, but out of all of the ones I’ve had, none of them have ever had red bull in them. What a great pick me up when you’re drinking at home with little ones too 😉

  19. That is an awesome addition to a mimosa! Caffeine is definitely needed if you’re having some alcohol for brunch. Nice work. Give your husband a high five from me 🙂

  20. I love mimosa! I will definitely be trying this twist for my upcoming brunch.

  21. I do love a mimosa at brunch!

  22. I actually made my husband a Manmossa made with Blood Orange Beer and OJ. It was amazing as well. He’s into craft beer. The beer we used was from The Great South Bay and Blood Orange is one of there flavors. We had it for Easter last year and might repeat it for Christmas.

  23. Now I know why you called them flying mimosas! Thanks for sharing this on Throwback Thursday, and I’ll be pinning this to our board! Be sure to follow! 🙂 Happy Holidays!

  24. Yummy! Sounds delicious! Surprised to hear about the caffeine shot though. Luckily I’m a morning person so this wouldn’t be necessary until around noon.
