You’ve probably heard the phrase “happy wife, happy life.” However, in our house right now it’s “happy kids, happy life.” My twins are going through that wonderful stage where every time I try to leave the room they scream like crazy. Not so much fun, especially when all I
want NEED is a cup of coffee. So I came up with the perfect solution: the at-home coffee bar. If you can’t get to the coffee maker, put the coffee maker where you are!
I’m pretty sure everyone needs an at-home coffee bar. The best thing about it is that you can put it anywhere you need it the most! Put it in your office so you don’t have to lose focus on your work (or get trapped by kids when your venture out in search of coffee). Put it in the bedroom so you don’t risk waking up sleeping babies in the morning for that first cup. Or be like me, and put it in the living room (or playroom) so you can stay with your family and still have your coffee.
This has been somewhat of a fantasy of mine forever. Can you imagine having coffee in every room of the house? I never followed through because then I’d have to have a tiny fridge in every room for the creamer. Then one day while I was shopping at Walmart (getting more k-cups, of course!) I saw something that caught my eye. It was like the light shone down on it, and I could hear the angels singing in my head. Right next to all the coffee I found the Dunkin’ Donuts® Coffee Creamer Singles! They don’t need to be refrigerated, so this was finally the solution I needed to make my dream come true.
They come in three flavors: vanilla, caramel, and hazelnut. I grabbed the vanilla for me, caramel for Hubs, and now I want to go back to try the hazelnut! They make my Dunkin’ K-Cups® taste even more delicious. Chocolate glazed donut with caramel coffee anyone? If you can’t get out to a coffee shop, make that flavor at home!
You might have figured it out by now, but we’re coffee junkies in this house. We even have a coffee maker collection: one for espresso, one regular coffee brewer, and our Keurig. That’s a lot of clutter on one counter, so I moved the Keurig to the living room. Our house is the queen of built-ins, and this spot here next to the television was begging to be turned into my coffee bar.
When you set up your own at-home coffee bar, you’ll need a few things:
- Coffee maker (preferably a single-serve with a water tank so you don’t have to keep running to the sink every time you need a cup)
- Dunkin’ Donuts® Coffee Creamer Singles
- Sweetener of your choice
- Small dish for trash
- Pretty container to hold your coffee & creamers
After I cleared the space I needed for the coffee maker, I covered the surface with a few kitchen towels to absorb any coffee splatter. Then I just set up the Keurig, and arranged all of my supplies.
This gorgeous dish holding the coffee & creamers is part of a dish set that was a wedding present from my mom.
As far as mugs go, choose what’s best for your environment. If you set up your coffee bar in your office, choose some mugs with motivational quotes or any favorite mugs. Since I set this up in our living room in order to have coffee when I’m with the kids, it’s imperative that these mugs have a lid! I don’t want any more rubber ducks or little fingers in my coffee! (Yes, that has happened!) Plus, these kids are very grabby, and I don’t want to spill my coffee (i.e. cry for hours about a waste of perfectly good coffee and then having to clean it up).
Keep a small dish on hand for any trash (empty sweetener packets, used k-cups, empty creamer containers). This top to a butter dish works perfectly! I dropped the bottom to it over a year ago, but I could never get rid of the top because I knew someday I’d have a new purpose for it. At the end of the day (or when I’m able to leave the room again sans heartbreaking cries), I just grab the dish, toss the trash in the kitchen, give it a quick rinse, and then put it back so it’s ready for the next round.
After I set it up, I had to give it a try. As soon as the girls saw me with a cup, they ran over with their water bottles to clink cups with me and say “cheers!” I got deliciously creamy coffee with no fuss. Happy kids, happy life!
