Not sure what you want for your New Year's Resolutions? Here are 29 ideas sure to spark a light for you!

It’s that time of year again. You know what I’m talking about – New Year’s resolutions time! I don’t know about you, but I’ve always been absolutely awful with resolutions. I start out the year all fired up and ready to go, and then within a few months it all fizzles.

I think part of the problem is that I’m never sure what I want my resolution to be. I settle on some mediocre goal, and then I quickly lose interest in it. Or I do that other thing where I want to lose weight, but then I find it again before the year is done. Whoops. Please tell me I’m not the only one who’s done that!

Regardless, I love resolutions. One way or another, they help us move forward. If you’re not making forward progress you’re just standing still.

So what do you do when you can’t think of a resolution? Think about what you’ve been doing, and how you could improve it. Think about something you’ve always wanted to try. It’s a mini-bucket list for a year. Here are some ideas to help you get started:

  • Read more books.
    • Maybe a new genre? Best-seller or award list?
  • Learn something new.
    • Cooking? Crafting? Sports? Blogging?
  • Lose weight.
    • Don’t be like me and find it again.
  • Be more focused on your family.
    • Set aside the phone and other distractions and be in the moment.
  • Have at least one date night per month.
    • Either out of the house or at home after the kids are in bed. Do something different, and have fun reconnecting.
  • Do more crafts with your children.
    • Pinterest, anyone?
  • Spend less time on social media.
    • It has to be the world’s biggest distraction EVER!
  • Pick a bad habit to put an end to.
    • Do you bite your nails? Use swear words in front of your kids/tiny echoes?
  • Stop smoking.
    • Does this one really need an explanation?
  • Drink more water.
    • Are you getting the recommended 8 glasses every day? I’m not.
  • Live a healthier life.
    • Maybe you want to cut out the junk food or sodas. Add in some exercise like yoga or walking. Take care of YOU!
  • Eat out less.
    • Save money and eat healthier!
  • Make more time for you.
    • We all need a little break. Sneak some time and read, or just sit in the quiet. Go out with friends.
  • Start making some of those projects you’ve found on Pinterest.
    • I’ve got about a million I could start working on.
  • Procrastinate less.
    • Totally guilty here. I’ve always said I do my best work under a deadline, but it’s really less stressful to get it done ahead of time.
  • Send out handwritten cards and and letters to friends.
    • Snail mail may be old fashioned, but it certainly spreads the smiles.
  • Make a budget.
    • Whether or not you are financially stable, a budget is always a good idea.
  • Travel more, even if it’s just small day trips.
    • Get out and shake things up! Go explore new places.
  • Learn a new language.
    • Sign language, Spanish, French, Italian, you name it!
  • Watch less TV.
    • Turn on the radio or read a book.
  • Recycle.
    • We all know we need to start taking care of our planet.
  • Get a tattoo.
    • I’ve always wanted one, but I’ve never gotten up the nerve to do it. I know, I can go through two c-sections, but a tattoo seems scary. Go figure. How about you?
  • Keep on top of housework.
    • Make a schedule, or just spend an extra 15 minutes a day cleaning. Less clutter keeps me from going batty.
  • Delegate.
    • There’s no reason you have to do everything. Share the workload and get others in the house/at work involved.
  • Start dreaming.
    • Big time! -Chances are you’re not going to win the lottery, but would it hurt to start dreaming about it? Just have fun and let your dreams take you away!
  • Communicate better.
    • Who couldn’t use a little extra push here?
  • Plant a garden.
    • Grow some flowers, veggies or herbs. It’ll be fun for your kids to watch.
  • Increase your savings account.
    • You never know what will happen, and it never hurts to have some cushion.
  • Love yourself more.
    • No one is perfect, so how about you love your imperfections and don’t be so hard on yourself this year?

How do you ensure success? The easiest way to not stick to your resolution is to forget about it, so set some reminders. Make a note on your calendar once a week or month to check in with yourself and see how your progress is going. Add a sticky note to the bathroom mirror so you see it every morning. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you slip a little. Just pick yourself up and get back on track.

I hope there’s something here that struck your fancy and inspired you. What will your New Year’s resolution be this year?

  2. Love all these !!! And I live when ppl make new years resolutions even if we fall short at least we are aiming towards something and I definitely need to drink more water

  3. Love these! I’m doing a reading challenge through goodreads this year and I also want to make an effort to meal plan each week. I’m hoping by doing so I’ll be able to save a little more money this year! Also, it’s crazy because it just ended but I’m going to try to be more on top of my holiday shopping and not wait until the last minute to get it all done!

    • I love goodreads! And meal planning is great. I need to start that again. Holiday shopping earlier is a must! We waited to the last minute this year and it was so stressful.

  4. I really love this post. The list is so pratical too

  5. One of my goals, though it didn’t get put on my list, is get my next tattoo. I had an appointment this year but got a big fat positive about three weeks before! If you’ve had a cesarean you can totally do a tattoo, I promise!

    • Lol! Oh what timing, Lauren! The same thing happened to me! I was seriously starting to consider it, and then boom. You’d think I wouldn’t be so terrified of it, but I am!

  6. With a blog, it is very difficult to spend less time on social media. That balance is such a difficult one to find.
