One of the things that amazes me most about the planner world is how everyone has their own style of planner decoration. Here I was thinking you just wrote down your appointments and that was it. Silly me, planners are for decorating! There seem to be two ends to the spectrum: glam planning and functional planning. I’m not even kidding, take a few moments and just search “glam planning.” Some people put in so much effort, but to me it looks way too complicated. (The planners look gorgeous, but sometimes I just don’t get how they still use it!) Once I jumped on the planner decoration bandwagon I realized that I lay somewhere in the middle of it all. I like my planner to be pretty, but still functional, and definitely affordable. Here’s how I do it:
You won’t need too many supplies.
- Your planner. I use this Happy Planner, but you can decorate any planner!
- Scrapbook paper. I found the pack below for less than $5. If you need all the boxes every day, then you’ll want to make sure that you choose a pattern that can still be written on and read easily.
- Glue stick
- Paper cutter. It’s not mandatory, but it helps cut the paper super-straight.
- Washi tape
- Decorative stickers. These are totally optional, as you can create a super cute look without them.
Directions for Planner Decoration
Once you select your gorgeous paper and complimentary washi tape, it’s time to get down to the really fun part. I swear, this is so relaxing for me. I love that it’s like a mini-craft project every week.
First, you’ll need to cut the scrapbook paper. Since the paper pad is 6” by 6”, I usually cut one double block, and 6 single blocks. Measure your planner to double check the dimensions, but I cut mine to be 1.5” x 2.5”.
Lay out the blocks on your weekly view and play around with it until you find an arrangement you like. Then glue them down.
Next you just add your washi tape. I run it all the way from one end to the other, at the top of the row. I also use one tape for the rows, and another for the bottom of the pages. The second tape design is usually glitter.
Add stickers if you want to, and then you’re done! It’s that easy! You can still write in every block, and it looks really pretty! Here are a few of my favorite layouts so far:
For the monthly view, I keep it much more simple. I run a patterned washi tape across the bottom of every week, and a glittered washi across the top of the pages.
BONUS TIP: Washi hack!
Since most washi tapes can be rather wide and take up a lot of precious room in my planner, I simply cut them in half! Before I put them in the planner, I measure out how much I need, and I place it on the paper cutter. One zip down the middle and I have skinny washi tape! Some designs might look weird if you cut them in half, but this really helps with most. This works wonders for both the monthly view and the weekly view.
So there you have it: planner decoration that is easy, affordable, and functional! All of those things are a must for me. I know there are a ton of sticker kits available for purchase, or you can print your own, but for now this is totally working for me. I can still use my entire layout, and I can still use my color-coding system!
